Celebrate all things Disney by making these easy Mickey Mouse Bookmarks with paper clips and Perler Beads

This week I’ve joined up with the amazing group at Geek Blogs Unite to celebrate the happiest place on earth, Disney!

I love Disney!   Yes, I really REALLY do.  I watched The New Mickey Mouse Club as a kid, and I’ve spent several decades collecting everything Donald Duck.  I remember looking forward to Sunday night when the whole family would gather around the tv to watch The Wonderful World of Disney.

Boy have times changed!!  Now the Walt Disney Company owns more things than I can even comprehend:  ESPN, ABC, Luscasfilm, Marvel Entertainment, The Muppets, and even the Lifetime Network.

I’ve got to be honest, Disney encompasses so many things these days,  that I had some real issues trying to figure out what to write about to celebrate the happiest place on earth.   I knew I wanted to come up with some kind of awesome Disney craft to create, but I couldn’t narrow it down.

First, I toyed with ideas for a couple of Star Wars crafts. I can’t help it folks, it’s still hard for me to accept that Star Wars is part of the Disney family.  So, that wasn’t happening.

Then, I almost made a Captain America shield.   It would have been a cool craft, but it didn’t really scream out Disney to me.

The problem was that the geeky crafts I came up for a Disney theme just didn’t hit heart of Disney. I guess because when I think of Disney, I don’t think of Star Wars or Marvel.  For me, Disney reminds me of that iconic mouse that started it all.  Mickey Mouse.  So, to celebrate the wonderful world of Disney, I’ve come up with a great Mickey Mouse Perler Bead paper clip bookmark.

This craft project is so easy to make.  Plus, it’s functional.  I don’t know about you, but we never have enough bookmarks in our house.   It was about time that I made some.

Instructions for Mickey Mouse Perler Bead Bookmarks

Start by making the Perler Bead pattern below.  If you are unsure of how to melt or work with Perler Beads you can read my instructions for Perler Beads.

Mickey Mouse Perler Bead Pattern

A simple Mickey Mouse Perler Bead Pattern is perfect for this craft.

Once you’ve melted your beads, place a heavy book on top of them as they cool.   It may not be necessary on this small sprite, but the Mickey Mouse sprite  needs to be flat after it’s cooled.

I made a plethora of Mickey Mouse heads with Perler Beads because I thought it would be fun to make a bunch of colorful bookmarks.  You can make as many as you like; just know that for each Mickey Mouse that you make you will have one bookmark.

The final step is turning your Perler Bead Mickey Mouse into a bookmark by gluing the plastic coated paper clip on to Mickey Mouse.  For this I used E6000 glue.  You could probably use a hot glue gun, but I really like the bond that E6000 gives once it’s completely cured.

Put a pea sized dollop of E6000 glue on the back of your Mickey Mouse.  Then, put a paper clip in the middle of it, as pictured below.

Glue the paperclip to the Perler Mickey to make your bookmark

After you have paper clips glued on top of all your Mickey Mouse Perler Bead sprites.  Cover them with a sheet of wax paper and put a heavy book on top of them. The book will hold the top of the paper clip in the glue.   That way you don’t have to sit there and hold it for 10 minutes while you wait for it to adhere.

By placing wax paper on the clips as they dry they won’t stick to the book you’ll need to place on top of them.

Here are a few tips for using the E6000 glue:

  • It will take few minutes for it to get tacky. Since your paper clips are light they will stick just fine as long as you put a book on top of them.
  • E6000 is very similar to rubber cement until it’s cured.  Good news if you make a mistake because you can just rub it off.
  • It takes 24 hours for E6000 to cure.

You don’t have to wait the full 24 hour curing time to take the book and wax paper off of your paper clip bookmarks.  We let ours dry overnight.   They seemed to be fine.
