Do you decorate for Halloween? We do. Well of course we do, we just love Halloween.
The other day, I was thinking about all the decor we have for Halloween, and I realized we didn’t really have anything to put in our bathroom. Last year I made this Halloween Perler Bead tea light holder and it sat in the bathroom, but it has a different home this year.
Anywho, I’ve been wanting to try my hand at making sugar scrubs so the idea for this pumpkin spice sugar scrub was born. It’s not only an easy Halloween decoration to make, it’s also functional.

- 2 cups of granulated white sugar
- 1/2 cup of grape seed oil
- 6 drops of orange essential oil
- 9 drops of clove essential oil
- 15 drops of cinnamon essential oil
- Yellow and Red Food coloring
- 12 oz Mason jar
- Black Perler Beads (and Perler Bead supplies)
- Hot glue and hot glue gun
- Green washi tape
You may be looking at the list of ingredients and wondering why I chose grape seed oil. I know, most DIY body products use coconut oil. Yes, coconut oil or even olive oil would also work. I just prefer using grape seed oil in my DIY skin products. Firstly, because it’s lighter than coconut oil, so it won’t clog my pores. Secondly, because it’s jam packed with Vitamin E. Grape seed oil actually has twice as much Vitamin E than olive oil.
Anyway, choose any carrier oil that you wish…or just choose the one have lying around the house.
I’ve also included links above to the brand of essential oil that I use. I am such a fan of the NOW brand. Every bottle I’ve ever bought has smelled amazing. Plus it’s reasonably priced, I see zero need to spend so much on those expensive brands.
Creating the Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub
This sugar scrub is so easy to make, it’s almost embarrassing. I couldn’t even provide picture of the making process because the kids and I were done in less than 5 minutes.
Start by adding 2 cups of sugar to a bowl. Then add your grape seed oil to the bowl and mix the two together. Voila! It’s a sugar scrub. A boring sugar scrub, but still a sugar scrub. Now is a good time to check the consistency of the scrub. If it seems a bit to “watery” add some more sugar. If it seems too thick add a bit more grape seed oil.
Once you have the consistency the way you like it’s time to spice this sugar scrub up!!
Add food coloring. To make an orange color, the ratio is 2 drops yellow food coloring to one drop of red food coloring. I used 4 drops of yellow and 2 drops of red. You might want a lighter orange, so start with 2 yellow:1 red, stir, and add more if you want.
Finally, add the essential oil and mix. This recipe calls for 30 drops of essential oil. The proportions above may not smell exactly like a spicy pumpkin. But the smell of clove, cinnamon, and orange remind me of fall. I think you’re going to love it.
Scoop your pumpkin spice sugar scrub into your mason jar and put the lid on.
Now, it’s time to turn this spicy pumpkin sugar scrub jar into a jack-o-lantern with some Perler Bead embellishments.
Perler Bead Jack-O-Lantern Face
Below is the pattern I used to make my Perler Bead jack-o-lantern face. If this is your first time working with Perler Beads, you may want to check out my Ultimate Perler Bead beginners guide before you begin.
It’s also worth noting that you don’t HAVE to use Perler Beads to embellish your sugar scrub jar. You could use sharpie markers, vinyl, washi tape or even paint to make a jack-o-lantern face. I chose Perler Beads…well because it’s kinda my thing.
Once you have your Perler Beads on the pegboard, you’ll need to iron them on both sides.
After ironing, let them cool for just a few minutes. The face pieces should still be warm at this point, but you don’t want them to be so hot that you will burn yourself.
Pick up each Perler Bead piece and hold it onto the jar with your sugar scrub in it. You don’t have to hold it there for long, just long enough so that the piece takes the shape of the jar.
By molding the Perler Beads in this way, it will be easier to glue it onto the jar…oh yeah, that’s the next step.
Let the beads cool completely, and then generously apply hot glue to the back of the Perler Bead pieces and hold until the glue cools.
All that’s left to do now is put some green washi tape around the edge of your jar lid and you have the cutest Halloween bathroom decoration EVER. Plus you have an awesome pumpkin spice sugar scrub to use throughout the whole season.
