Just a few months ago, I wrote a post about the amazing Funko icon generator on the Funko’s Japanese website. This week, America’s Funko has released something similar. It’s called Pop Yourself, and according to Funko is a way to create a fun Pop avatar of yourself that can be used as your avatar across all their subscription services.
Pop! Yourself is still in Beta, but I still wanted to head over to Funko try it out.
Here’s me as a Funko Pop! Whee!
The Funko avatar generator gives you options to customize all of the following:
At first it’s very underwhelming when you check out all of the choices, but Funko promises on their blog that they plan to add new features and items so you can change your avatar on a regular basis.
How to Pop Yourself
The first thing you want to do is head on over to Funko.com
The avatar generator is very intuitive to use. You click on each category and then you can scroll through the collection of customizations that are offered. You can see from the image below exactly how it looks.
The preview on the page is small, so it’s hard to see all the details as you Funko yourself. But, each customization has words when you hover over it so you can see what it is you are adding to your Funko Pop Avatar.
After you’ve customized all the features of your very own Funko Pop you can choose from one of their brightly colored backgrounds.
Finally, you will need to create an account to save your Funko.
When you save your Funko it adds your new avatar as your profile picture. According to Funko, they will be seamlessly be adding this avatar to all your subscription accounts over the next 6 month. Cool, right?
My first impressions of the Pop Icon Generator
Although Funko says there are over a million ways to customize your Pop, it seems like the choices are lacking. You can’t, for example, add a mouth. There are also only a few outfits to choose from. Of course, since Pop! Yourself is still in Beta, I’m sure in time this will be really cool as the company continues to add ways to customize your Funko Avatar.
The other thing that REALLY bothered me is that as a male I could have long hair, but with a female body type most of the hairstyles are fairly short.
I’d love to see some of the following added to the Pop! Yourself generator:
- Different mouths and lips to choose from
- More outfit choices. There are only 6 pants and 7 shirts to choose from now.
- Different eyes and eye color
- More hairstyles
- Different backgrounds. The ones that they have are all bright and very vibrant, but sometimes you just want a plain background.
- Accessories. OMG, more accessories. Hats, jewelry, scars, tattoos; I could go on and on. Heck, my Funko avatar would love to wield a lightsaber or a blaster.
Although I find the Pop Yourself generator lacking in all the things above I really do think it’s a great start. I can’t wait to see what Funko adds to in the upcoming months.
